It can be done in both directions. Everything, what works best with the number of persons and the number of tables, you must complete.
We had my parents and my parents and all grandparents DH (4) and an aunt of "special" one of me and DH (the elderly, widows, childless, but they were like a grandfather to all 'us) a table.
Its really up to you - I have seen in both directions, but I do always make the parents "host" your own table (1 for parents, boyfriends, friends, 1 for parents) very close aunts and uncles and grandparents are still there but.
I answer, because it is a very interesting cultural differences between Americans and British aircraft seats. Here in England, sit with the parents of the bride and groom, groomsmen and bridesmaids. If you were in another place a riot!
